The warm early morning light illuminates the prominent landmark, Picacho Peak, located between Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona.

Picacho Peak is located 45 miles north of downtown Tucson. The peak stands out as it rises up from the broad flat valley floor. The upper portions of the mountain consist of vertical rock walls. It is an eye-catching sight.

Picacho Peak State Park encompasses the mountain. The park maintains several trails that offer both easy and challenging hikes. One leads to the top of the peak and requires the use of installed cables.

In addition to the geologic features found at the park, there is wildlife and a diverse plant community. In the spring, you might find the lower flanks of the mountain carpeted with wildflowers.

“The Battle of Picacho Pass,” the most-western conflict of the American Civil War, was fought nearby. The park has a memorial to the battle and an enactment of the battle is an annual event.

The park has a visitor’s center and a park store. Remember, this is rugged desert terrain. Bring sturdy foot wear and plenty of water.
