A native bee, one of many species found in southeast Arizona, collects pollen from a Desert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata).
Honey bees were introduced to the U.S. because they live in colonies of hundreds to thousand of bees and were effective in pollinating crops. Most native bees, on the other hand, are solitary by nature. Still they are vital for the pollination of native plants. There are well over 1,000 species of native bees in Arizona.
