The Arizona Woodpecker is a bird of Mexico. Its range barely extends into western New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. For that reason, it is always a joy to see them. As you can see in the photo, the dark brown back and spotted breast adds another degree of difficulty in finding them.

I photographed this guy in Madera Canyon. Madera Canyon is about 40 miles south of Tucson, Arizona. The canyon supports a diverse habitat in its oak-juniper covered hillsides and riparian bottom. It attracts a wide variety of birds. In addition to being a world renowned birding location, the canyon is a very popular hiking destination.
The Friends of Madera Canyon website provides good information about the canyon.
